Red Hat Molls

Last Tuesday the RHS Molls were going to have a cookie exchange. However, the Queen and Hostess made the executive decision not to exchange cookies since there seems to be so many flu bugs running around.

Our Hostess did a wonderful job baking batches and batches of cookes to serve with her many varieties of tea and coffee. Not only that, she presented gifts to each red hatter! She also shared with us her collection of dolls and vintage purses.

I am sorry that I neglected to bring my camera. Gosh, that's twice in a row the Queen screwed up the picture taking routine. I'm sure when the holidays are over I'll get back into being the Queen that you all deserve.

A BIG THANKS goes to Lorraine for hosting the event.

May your Holidays be Merry. Keep those Red Hats ready for the new year.

The RHS Molls enjoyed tea, company, and touring at the Garratt Mansion in Alameda this afternoon. Our Hostess, Betty, served her homemade goodies. Michelle (Queen Mother of the Alameda Red Hats) explained the three teas that we enjoyed, Holiday Tea, Earl Grey and lavender.

The mansion was decorated up for the holidays and we got a chance to tour most of the rooms. This definitely looks like a bed and breakfast place that needs to have a Red Hat Pajama Party someday!

Queen Mum passed out a grab bag full of purple items, each under $2 and carefully selected at Target. There was a bit of laughter during the opening of these gifts which included everything from deodorant to Sexy underwear.

Raucous laughter roared throughout the room as Queen Mary recited "When I am Old I'll Live With My kids" and Vonne Anne shared a new version of the "Twelve Days of Christmas".

Unfortunately, the batteries on the digital camera died after the first picture which is shown below. If anyone has other pictures to share, please feel free to forward them to me so we can share them here.

Much thanks goes to Vonne Anne for organizing this fun day.

The impending rain storm did not stop a group of 19 RHS Molls from attending a wonderful luncheon at the Palace Hotel today. We took over this BART car in Lafayette drawing massive amounts of attention from the other half of the car. A young wannabe red hatter asked if she could take our picture. the train lurched when she snapped this picture so it is a bit blurred.

At the Palace Hotel we caught the attention of one lady claiming to be from Snobby Hillsboro. It looked like she would rather be with our group than hers so we let her sneak into this picture. Shes the one standing with the fur around her neck.

The Hillsboro lady seemed to be having a great time so we Lorraine let her wear her red hat for the next picture.

Lunch was great but this dessert was absolutely divine. The picture doesn't do it justice.

The RHS Molls celebrated Halloween with a super blast at one of our members homes. This is just the entrance:

Here's the group.

The food was fantastic. The crowd was joyous. The only entertainment required was amply supplied by all present. What more can I say.

Evidence that a good time was had by all appears below in random order:

Somehow Old Sacramento may never be the same. On October 4th approximately 500 Red Hat Society Ladies gathered in town for a sort of mini-convention. Several of the RHS Molls participated.

First on the agenda was a Delta brunch cruise aboard the Spirit of Sacramento (there were two paddleboats but this is the one we went on). Here we are at our tables:

Next on the agenda was an afternoon pajama party in the Queen's room at the Vagabond Inn. Three of our red hatters didn't show up so we adorned their door with our handicrafter slippers. There was a lot of giggling in our room as we delved into a box of See's and crafted these slippers out of Sanitary Napkins:

Here's the queen in the flapper dress that she has been working on for months. Fortunately her cousin sent her a purple boa just the day before this event so she was able to cover up some of the mistakes:

The grand finale of the day was the Mystery Dinner aboard the Delta Queen. What better place for 150 red hatters to show up in their finest attire. Fortunately none of us was among the victims or the perpetrators. However our Queen was intereviewed as one of the suspects.

The A's may have lost to the Mariner's yesterday but the RHS Molls had a good time at the party. We won't tell who pigged out on Super Hot Dogs, Garlic Fries and Frozen Chocolate Malts (yes the Queen had a stomach ache all night). Was it worth it? You bet!

Check the calendar at the RHS Molls Website. We have lots of great adventures coming up.

A dozen RHS Molls highly recommend Captain's Cottage, 2548 San Pablo Avenue, Pinole as one of the best places to enjoy high tea. We enjoyed four courses, each one a delicious delight, as well as an assortment of teas. There must be over twenty varieties of tea on the menu.

Our most gracious hostesses were attired in traditional tea service garments. (I am so sorry that I didn't take their pictures - will do so next time).

This is a place that we will return to soon. Probably at the change of seasons as there happens to be a little shop two blocks down the street that has wonderful seasonal goodies. Alas, I did not write down the name - will do so next time. (Perhaps the RHS Molls need a journalist to report on these events - one who pays attention to details.)

Anyway, here we are:

Eight of the RHS Molls travelled 88 miles to Healdsburg on Saturday to meet up with over 250 Red Hatters. We did paint the town red and purple making quite an impression on residents, tourists and retailers.

First of all we gathered at the gazebo for announcements and prizes. Margie & Mary took over the stage to tell about our chapters.

After a long afternoon of eating, shopping and carousing, we rested a bit in the town square.

The weather was quite hot so we got just a little out of control and ended up in the fountain.

Have you signed up for the August 16th trip to Healdsburg yet? You can do this at the last minute but it would be nice to arrange the car pools by next weekend. So, please let me know if you are considering this adventure. It will be fun. It's always fun when hundreds of red hatters take over a city.

Our picnic at Rossmoor was a big success today. I do believe that all 18 of us had a wonderful time. We indulged in every imaginable "high tea" treat.

Those members who live in Rossmoor will be featured on Channel 11 (the official Rossmoor TV channel) and possibly in the Rossmoor news. Please note that the Queen does not live in Rossmoor but she is in the picture... just because she is the Queen.

Our table was decorated with linen, flowers, and fancy teapots. Each Moll brought her own favorite teacup.

The next schedule event will be August 16th trip to Healdsburg.

But please check back frequently because there may be a couple of interim, last minute meetings.

We now have 30 official RHS Molls Ladies!

THE LATEST NEWS:

Olivia has worked on a theme song for our chapter. Let's work on learning this. Of course I expect you all to drown me out because when I sing I sound like I've swallowed my red feather boa. Here goes:

call molls irresponsible
call molls unreliable
throw in a little foolishness too
does our purple clothing abhore you?
with our red hatted heads
we laugh, not bore you

call molls unpredictable
tell us we're impractical
red hats we're inclined to pursue
call us irresponsible
yes we're unreliable
but we're understandably new
we're irresponsibly mad, it's true

Olivia has also arranged to order sequin red hats for those who are interested. Cost is $13 plus shipping. So if you have not yet expressed a desire for this fine baseball hat, please let me know this weekend so she can go ahead and place the order.

Judy O. is working with a friend to design our banner.

Looks like our participation in the Benicia parade tonight and the Fairfield parade fizzled out.

We are getting into July with no plans for the month. Anyone have any desire to plan an something? Even if it's just a casual lunch or picnic it would be good to get together as our own chapter event.

Remember to put August 16th on your calendar for our trip to Healdsburg. Sounds like it will be a blast with red hatters from many many chapters descending upon the village. While it is fun to be part of such a grand event, we will have plenty of time to get to know our own chapter members during the ride up and back. Please let me know if you are interested in going to this event so I can make some reservations for lunch for our group. Also let me know if any of you have ideas where we should eat in that area.

Ellen and Pat are working on plans for an A's game in September. The sequin baseball caps will be perfect for that adventure.

I'm looking forward to see you all soon.

Have a Happy and Safe 4th of July.

Red Hatter Alert: In The Costco Connection this month it is noted that according to a random telephone survey for Pilot Pen Corporation, "pen users of the purple persuasion make the best workers." It is also stated that "most men who use purple pens are likely to accidentally take pens home. Size doesn't seem to matter..." This is good news for the red hat ladies who covet everything and anything purple. Of course we all know that we are good workers. But chances are if our husband/boyfriend is a hard worker, we will find purple pens in his pockets!

Two RHS Molls Red Hatters and one coerced Pink Hatter visited the Fairfield Writers Picnic yesterday. We certainly enjoyed the company and great variety of potluck goodies. The weather was a perfect breezy warm day at Alan Witt Park. This Chapter really knows how to make a picnic fun. We will probably borrow some of their ideas for our next picnic... book exchange, bean bag toss, pin the ??? on the hotflash, raffle, and hula hoops. And how about that fortune teller that belongs to their group... perhaps we could bribe her to come to our next picnic?

The RHS Molls enjoyed the company of approximately 50 red hatters at Tyme for Tea in Niles. The Personalities in Purple did a wonderful job of organizing the event. It's a great place to have tea and a fun place for antique shopping. We definitely felt that we were served in a royal fashion!

Kerry from the SF Red Hat Babes sent the picture below and wrote this review about our picnic:

Hi Red Hatters,

Here's the review on the picnic! Annette & I drove together arriving at 10:00 am. The parking lot was still pretty empty. We were about the 3 car there. We meet 3 Red Hatters from Red Hat Divas of Vaca Valley (Vacaville). They moved to our table since another group was huge. The table next to us was selling jewelry.

Across the way was selling bad girl dolls standing in the corner decorated in our colors & ceramic heads with different hats (shelf heads) for $3.00 ea. Then a The Red Writers sold water bottle with the logo and car antenna balls. Micky came and brought food enough for an army! Laura came with hubby. We took pictures at noon. There was a group that did sing along with a guitar player.

We met up with the other San Francisco group. I Left My Hat In San Francisco. What a nice group of ladies. They were formed by a beading guild. The Queen Mom lives right by me! We'll plan something together. They did email to Welcome our chapter. But I didn't get the email. Then to notice when I got home there is another SF group call What the Hatter. Which I emailed to and never got a response.

The picnic was over with by around 2:00 pm. In the town was over 30 antique shops. As were drove thur the streets you can see Red Hatters popping in & out!

It is so much fun when there are so many Red Hatters! I had saw pictures of the Convention! Wow, I wanna go next year! It's in Texas! The first week in April. Save your money!

Our Picnic at Waterfront Park in Martinez was a HUGE SUCCESS. The RHS Molls and Winsome Wonders enjoyed hosting close to 100 Red Hatters from Roseville, Sacramento, Copperopolis, Fairfield, Novato, Petaluma, San Francisco, Sonoma County, VacaValley, Lodi and maybe a few other cities.

My camera failed to capture the group picture so I would love to have a copy to post here if anyone would please forward it to me. Meanwhile, here's the best one I snapped:

Plans are coming together for the Martinez Red Hat Picnic on May 31st. The RHS Molls of Lafayette and sister chapter Winsome Wonders of Walnut Creek are looking forward to gathering with other Bay Area Chapters.

We would love to have at least an approximate count from the other chapters so we know what to anticipate. Please keep us posted with your chapter numbers.

When: Saturday, May 31st, 2003
Schedule:
11:00am The Gathering Begins
Noon Pictures and Announcements
After That: Typical Red Hat Disorganization - Who Knows

Where:
Waterfront Park, Martinez
North Court Street via Ferry Street (Across the street from the old Amtrak Station),
Picnic Area behind the Bocce Ball Courts (as you drive in to the park the road curves to the left - you want to keep going straight to the parking lot next to the Bocce Ball Courts - watch for the "Bocce Ball" sign). We have reserved the picnic area behind the Bocce Ball Courts.

Food:
Lunch: We are asking each chapter to decide for themselves if they want to brown bag or arrange their own individual potluck. Or, there are several places within walking distance of the park to grab some food.
Beverages: Please bring your own
Dessert: We will have a dessert table and ask that each chapter bring a dessert to share, preferably a "napkinable" finger food.

What Else to Consider Bringing:
Tables & Chairs: there are quite a few picnic tables but if you happen to have something portable it might be a good idea to throw it in your trunk.
Blankets: there is plenty of lawn area for relaxing
Table Cloths: Just in case you need them
Toys: Bocce Balls, croquet sets, badminton, kickball, balloons, bubbles, knitting needles??????
Other: Sunscreen, umbrellas - who knows?

Publicize your Group:
Please bring a sign of some sort so we know who you are. We will also provide a bulletin board if you want to share some favorite pictures, announcements, etc.

Attire:
The usual purple attire with red hat of course. Picnic casual or flamboyant - you decide.

Activities:
You bring the toys and the playmates will come. In other words, we are not planning any specific events. This is a free-for-all make-your-own-adventure sort of gathering. We know that Red Hatters have the imagination and wherewithal to make this a great event no matter what we actually do. The park is a great place to wander around, check out the pier, feed the ducks (beware of those vicious geese), or bird watch. Downtown Martinez is a block away from the park and has an abundance of antique shops.

Admission:
In order to recapture some of our expenses of procuring the park we are asking for a $1 donation from each attendee. In exchange we will provide you with a beautiful identification tag so everyone will know who you are and where you came from.

Please email if you or your chapter will be attending rhsmolls@aol.com

On Saturday May 3rd we enjoyed An Afternoon of Tea and Historical Fashions at the Grace Episcopal Church in Martinez. We polished off three tiers of Scones, finger sandwiches, petit fours, and chocolate coated strawberries accompanied by Earl Green Tea.

Mrs. Maxine Welty narrated the parade of historical fashions from the Middle Ages through the Twentieth Century (and a glimpse into the future). The gowns were all from her exclusive collection developed after years of research.

We joined some Red Hatters from Petaluma today at the Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker. First we gathered together in front of the place:

Then we dressed up for the tour. Did I hear someone say something about getting prepared to shoot chocolate bunnies?

We didn't hear much with the ear muffs but we certainly did enjoy the chocolate samples and shopping after the tour.

We are off to visit the Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker today. Looking forward to meeting up with our Red Hat friends from Petaluma.

Hi Ladies,

Found this and thought you might enjoy it

NEVER GO WALKING OUT WITHOUT YOUR HAT PIN
A BAWDY COCKNEY SONG

My Granny was a very shrewd old lady,
The smartest woman that I ever met.
She used to say, "Now listen to me, Sadie,
There's one thing that you never must forget."

"Never go walking out without your hat pin.
The law won't let you carry more than that.
For if you go walking out without your hat pin,
You may lose your head as well as lose your hat.

"My Granny said men never could be trusted.
No matter how refined they might appear.
She said that many maidens' hearts got busted
Because men never had but one idea.

I've heard that Grandpa really was a mess,
So Grandma knew whereof she spoke, I guess.

Never go walking out without your hat pin.
Not even to some very classy joints.
For when a fellow sees you've got a hat pin
He's very much more apt to get the point.

My Mama, too, set quite a bad example.
She never heeded Grandmama's advice.
She found that if you give a man a sample,
The sample somehow never does suffice.

In fact, it's rumored I might not have been
If Mum had not gone out without her pin.

Never go walking out without your hat pin.
It's about the best protection you have got.
For if you go walking out without your hat pin,
You may come home without your you-know-what!

Finally got a snapshot of our last get together at Camellia's Tea on February 15th. Thank you Queen Mary.

Tea at Lisa's for March 15th is almost filled up. If you are interested, contact me ASAP.

Our day at the races on March 22nd might not happen if there is not more interested. Please let me know if you are planning to attend the event and what your expectations might be. i.e. do you want to go with the general admission and hang out in the bleachers, or have lunch, turf club. Or perhaps I should say - how much do you want to spend for entrance fees and food?

We have now heard from 45 chapters regarding the May 31st picnic. Wouldn't it be something if they ALL showed up???

The day was a big success. Five of us crammed into the Queens Saturn at Lafayette Bart to make the trip to Santa Rosa. Although cramped, all were in good spirits and ready for the adventure.

First stop - lunch at Brasserie de la mer where we joined two Red Hatters from Petaluma for a superb assortment of soup, salads, fish & chips, pasta and salmon. Other diners may have been slightly distracted but some were brave enough to approach our group the usual questions.

The guard at the Schultz Museum commented on our arrival, "looks like trouble is coming." In spite of her curious warning, we all behaved and enjoyed the tour.

We stepped through the muddy lawn for a quick picture with Charlie Brown before we departed.

Stay tuned for the next event.
